• Common Gauge Sizes: Range from very fine (e.g., 27G, 25G) for small exotics or intradermal injections, to very large (e.g., 16G, 14G) for rapid fluid administration or draining thick fluids. Typical Range: 18G to 22G are among the most common for standard subcutaneous and intramuscular injections in cats, dogs, and livestock.
• Wall Thickness: This determines the needle's rigidity and the internal diameter (lumen). Standard wall thickness is common, but thin-wall designs exist for a larger lumen at the same gauge, allowing for faster flow rates.
• Length: Range from short (3/8" or 10mm for intradermal) to very long (3.5" or 90mm for deep intramuscular injections in large pigs or cattle). Typical Range: 1" (25mm) and 1.5" (40mm) are standard for many IM and SC injections.
